Ce séminaire propose d’interroger l’histoire et la sociologie de l’antiracisme – ou des antiracismes – dans l’espace atlantique depuis la fin du 18e siècle. Plus précisément, nous chercherons à réfléchir à la façon dont ce que nous appelons aujourd’hui “racisme” a été pensé et combattu sur le temps long à l’intérieur d’une aire géographique marquée par des formes paroxysmiques de violence raciale et des stratégies influentes de résistance à cette violence. Si les recherches concernant l’histoire et la sociologie du racisme sont très nombreuses, plus rares – et moins visibles – sont celles spécifiquement consacrées à l’antiracisme sans verser dans une approche normative de réforme de soi-même. Il s’agira donc de problématiser ces enjeux à une époque marquée par la montée d’un anti-antiracisme virulent. En s’appuyant notamment sur des recherches en cours, ce séminaire aura pour ambition d’articuler une perspective transdisciplinaire et transnationale sur la dynamique des pensées et des pratiques antiracistes.

This seminar examines the history and sociology of anti-racism – or anti-racisms – in the Atlantic region since the end of the 18th century. More specifically, we will be looking at how what we now call “racism” has been thought about and combated over the long term within a geographical area marked by paroxysmal forms of racial violence and influential strategies of resistance to this violence. While there is a wealth of research on the history and sociology of racism, few studies are explicitly devoted to anti-racism, and when they are, the most widely publicized often favor an approach oriented towards self-transformation. The aim is to problematize these issues at a time marked by the rise of virulent anti-antiracism. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, this seminar is committed to articulating a transdisciplinary and transnational perspective, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of anti-racist thought and practice.
